a poem to a nation

POEM TO A NATION

What it means to feel vulnerable and lost without trace
Is something not all of us will ever have to face
That moment in time when all hope seems lost
Coming to terms with the devastation & terrible cost

Nature in all its glory so beautiful to behold
Then without warning a different story is told
How quickly things can change in a short space of time
Uncontrollable events without reason or rhyme

Innocent people caught up in the chaos and trauma
Powerless to resist the unfolding menacing drama
Swamped by the rising floodwaters taking its toll
Raging torrent sweeping through, out of control

Statistics rising daily, nothing is spared, praying in vain
Hoping that a miracle will come & stop the misery and pain
Search-and-rescue operations, towns bought to their knees
Many trapped in cars or on the roofs of buildings, clinging to trees

Queensland's "darkest hour" since the floods began at the end of November
This sequence of events forever engraved we will always remember
Extreme bravery and courage, emergency workers & ordinary folk too
Saving lives and helping those in need, doing all they can do

A freak of nature, soon to be more devastating than the floods of 1974.
The flooded Lockyer Valley and the Wivenhoe Dam, unable to take more
Banks on the brink ready to burst, forced into controlled releases
A nation stretched to the limits, waiting to pick up the pieces

Regardless of color race or creed, as a world we must come together
To restore the lives of those affected, our greatest endeavour
The fabric of life is fragile, and nature has no prejudice or favourite side
Completely at its mercy, what happens is inevitable, we cannot hide

Our thoughts and prayers go out to each and every one affected
From the depths of despair over time your lives can be resurrected
A nation embattled and weary, though strong enough to survive
With your courage and fortitude you will once again be able to thrive
